WVUSO 2020-20121 season opener features Rodion Shchedrin’s ballet score, Carmen Suite, an exciting take on the great music from Bizet’s opera composed for and made famous by the Bolshoi Ballet.   Opening the program is George Walker’s Lyric for Strings, a beautiful work written dedicated to the composer’s recently passed grandmother.  “Walker’s brief work is a powerful expression of love and rememberance,”  according to Mitchell Arnold, WVU’s Director of Orchestral Activities. “It is particularly appropriate to perform this expressive work today, with our love for music-making and our sense of community, especially in times that are troubling for so many.”

Shchedrin composed the score for Carmen Suite for his wife, then the Bolshoi’s prima ballerina, Maya Plisetskaya.  Shchedrin chose many of the great passages from Bizet’s opera, Carmen, and cast it for an orchestra of strings and percussion.  The production was a great hit for the Bolshoi; it has been performed often, in Russia and on tour.
